Handicare has identified a potential issue with the compact lights on Puma, Beatle, Alex and Ibis XP power wheelchairs. The lights might cause overheating and, as a result, parts of the compact lights unit could melt or, in extreme situations, ignite. As the safety of the people using our products is our first priority, Handicare has decided, as a precautionary measure, to replace the lights in the compact lights unit by new LED lights. This action is effected in cooperation with the Dutch Health Care Inspectorate (IGZ).
The precautionary action will affect Puma, Beatle, Alex and Ibis XP power wheelchairs equipped with compact light units sold from November 2003 up to and including September 2011. The majority of these wheelchairs were delivered in the Netherlands. Additionally, affected wheelchairs were delivered in Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Norway, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom.
We request users of a Puma, Beatle, Alex or Ibis XP power wheelchair equipped with compact lights to stop using their front and rear lights until the lights have been replaced; they can continue to drive their wheelchair and use the blinkers. Users of an affected power wheelchair will be contacted by their local dealer for exchange of the lights.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
